Date: 2-4 October 2008

Congress Hall of the University of Pécs, Hungary

(Address: 7624 Pécs, Szigeti u. 12. Hungary)

Concept: The number of migrants in the enlarged European Union is increasing rapidly. Whether the purpose of the journey is tourism, looking for jobs and hoping for better living conditions, or whether forced to leave their country of origin and request asylum, migrants’ health status and health care needs require attention and challenge European health and social care systems. Addressing migrant health goes beyond issues of differing morbidity profiles and vaccination status linked to country of origin or potential for spreading diseases, such as SARS, MDR TB, or tropical diseases.  Health and social assistance tailored to migrants’ needs is an essential prerequisite of the smooth and successful integration of new migrants and the large existing migrant communities Europe-wide. Its success has clear economic impact and benefits, but highlights the need for well-prepared health staff and a coordinated EU-level health policy where public health safety, human rights and transcultural aspects are equally represented and harmonized.

Hungary provides a significant segment of the new EU Schengen borders, making the country even more ‘accessible’ for irregular migration. The adequate assistance and care of victims of trafficking in humans represents a further challenge. In this regard, the incorporation of a public health module into the current Schengen border management system needs to be considered.

The health-related issues of an increasing number of tourists travelling the world for business and leisure further require attention to questions of protection, avoidance of health hazards, as well as measures to follow in case of illness.

This conference aims to bring together experts from different background to discuss these new challenges in their complexity and from different perspectives. It aims to highlight and draw attention to this new interdisciplinary field of health sciences, linking infectology to public health and cultural anthropology.
